Master The Fundamentals

It was the opening day of Canada goose season and we were hunting a marshy backwater bay on a small lake. The area had a large concentration of resident Canada geese that had made the lake their home throughout the year. For three weeks prior to opening day there were approximately 500 Canada geese that had been using the bay we would be hunting. We were quite sure that an easy limit of Canada geese would be ours. Unfortunately it wasn't as easy as we anticipated.

When the day broke we found that a group of five hunters had positioned themselves approximately 250-300 yards down wind of us on a point extending into the lake. They had a large spread of Canada goose decoys set out, but with the large number of geese in the area, we were sure that both groups would enjoy an excellent opening morning. That whole idea changed when they started calling at the first group of geese in the morning. In all of the years that I have hunted geese, I can honestly say, I have never heard such horrific calling.

As the geese began to return to the lake from feeding, these five goose callers began to wail and squawk at each flock with such rancid calling that they literally blew any goose that was in the area off the lake. The sights and sounds would have been quite entertaining if it did not have such a negative impact upon our hunting. Countless flocks of geese were locked up on their decoy spread or were attempting to slide back into the bay, only to be greeted by five goose callers that sounded more like screaming, howling cats than Canada geese.

Although we eventually killed our limit of Canada geese that morning the sour calling coming from the group downwind of us took much of the enjoyment of the morning away. Unfortunately, as bad as their calling was, I am convinced that they believed they were doing a great job of calling.

It was apparent that what they lacked and what many waterfowl hunters who call ducks and/or geese lack is: An Understanding And A Mastering Of The Basics Of Duck And/Or Goose Calling.

Whether calling ducks or calling geese, an accomplished waterfowl caller must have an understanding and mastery of the basics. It is the understanding and mastery of the basics that help set the accomplished caller apart from the throng of callers that do not possess these skills. Fortunately becoming a competent caller is quite simple. It only requires that you do two things. First, learn the basics of duck and goose calling and second, practice.

In addition we recommend that you listen to Mastering The Fundamentals and Rising Above The Crowd, to master the basics of duck calling and take your calling to the next level.

"I have been waterfowl hunting since I was 13. It's a sickness, which i'm not trying very hard to cure. I found your site just a month, or so, ago, and am enjoying it very much. I hope you keep up the great articles and videos, and update the site as often as possible. I've read, and re-read every page on here, and like I said, I'm loving what you have here!"
Alan Pendgraft, Iowa

"Have to first say that I am amazed by your website. Lots of REAL and PRACTICAL stuff. I watched the videos on painting the drake mallard and it definitely was worth joining!"
Randy LeClair, Ontario Canada

"The info you guys have built up on here is priceless. I got hooked on ducks and geese two years ago and don't know a whole lot about hunting techniques or strategies. This year I have had limited hunting outings as I'm in the military and been deployed allot, but using some of your suggestions, I have already seen improvements to my kill #'s."
Rollie Flint, Minnesota
