Use Or Build Blinds That Look Natural

Use the following guidelines to help you develop a blind that has a natural look to it.

  • First, avoid blinds that look like a box. - There aren't a lot of things that are square in most natural settings. What you most often find are objects that are round, oval, bushy, wavy, or brushy looking. When you hunt from a blind that has a very boxy or square look to it, you immediately look out of place and give your position away.
  • Second, camouflage your blind from the ground or water level up. - One of the boats that I hunt from has FastGrass that actually hangs in the water. With the design of the blind, it looks like a muskrat house from a distance. A muskrat house is a site that all waterfowl are familiar and comfortable with. When you camouflage your blind from the ground or water level up, it gives it a much more natural appearance.
  • Third, create a more natural look by both vertically and horizontally applying your blind material. - Your objective is to create something that looks real. Apply your blind materials in a variety of positions. Doing so helps create a blind that looks like part of the landscape.

  • Finally, create a three-dimensional look.

Give you blind a more natural look by adding material that adds body and fullness to it. The use of tumbleweeds, branches with leaves attached, three-dimensional camo material, grass or crop cover that bends and lies in different directions all help to create the look of an object that more closely resembles a natural object.

    Always Look For What's Wrong

  • First, always police the area your blind is in.
  • Pick up all shells, paper, gum and candy wrappers and any other stuff that might be littering the area and giving you away.
  • Walk downwind of your blind 70 - 100 yards and look to see what might be wrong.
  • Are there holes in your blind, can you see someone's face, are there gun barrels that are shining, do you match the surrounds? Look for anything and everything that might cause you a problem.
  • Always Remember - Ducks And Geese Look For What's Wrong, Not What's Right.

"I have been waterfowl hunting since I was 13. It's a sickness, which i'm not trying very hard to cure. I found your site just a month, or so, ago, and am enjoying it very much. I hope you keep up the great articles and videos, and update the site as often as possible. I've read, and re-read every page on here, and like I said, I'm loving what you have here!"
    Alan Pendgraft, Iowa

"Have to first say that I am amazed by your website. Lots of REAL and PRACTICAL stuff. I watched the videos on painting the drake mallard and it definitely was worth joining!"
    Randy LeClair, Ontario Canada

"The info you guys have built up on here is priceless. I got hooked on ducks and geese two years ago and don't know a whole lot about hunting techniques or strategies. This year I have had limited hunting outings as I'm in the military and been deployed allot, but using some of your suggestions, I have already seen improvements to my kill #'s."
