Use Clean Decoys

If you've ever had the opportunity to watch ducks and geese on the water once they have come back from feeding or if you witnessed them as they are loafing, one of the first things you probably noticed is how much time they spend cleaning and preening themselves. Ducks and geese are clean freaks. Therefore, if you want to create a realistic decoy spread you're decoys should always be as bright and clean as possible.

Decoys that are covered with mud or very dull in color simply don't look real. It's true that you may be able to kill uneducated birds with decoys like these, but once they've been hunted a day or two they will be on the lookout for everything that could possibly be wrong in your spread, especially your decoys.

We clean our decoys at the beginning of each season and throughout the season when necessary. Although it does take some time to clean our spreads, cleaning our decoys is very easy. We simply use a scrub brush, some mild detergent or cleaner and some water. Once we've given our decoys a good scrubbing and cleaning, we then apply a coat of non-glare or low gloss interior auto polish like Armour-All.

We add the coat of non-glare polish to produce the natural sheen that ducks and geese have. As the season progresses and the sheen starts to where off, we simply spray some on a rag and wipe the decoys with in to once again produce the natural sheen.

Testimonials

"Thank you! This was my first duck season and thnks to your online audio lessons I was able to call Mallards to my dekes and knock them out of the sky! Much appreciated!"
Scott Deming, Syracuse, NY

"I have been waterfowl hunting since I was 13. It's a sickness, which i'm not trying very hard to cure. I found your site just a month, or so, ago, and am enjoying it very much. I hope you keep up the great articles and videos, and update the site as often as possible. I've read, and re-read every page on here, and like I said, I'm loving what you have here!"
Alan Pendgraft, Iowa

"Have to first say that I am amazed by your website. Lots of REAL and PRACTICAL stuff. I watched the videos on painting the drake mallard and it definitely was worth joining!"
Randy LeClair, Ontario Canada

"The info you guys have built up on here is priceless. I got hooked on ducks and geese two years ago and don't know a whole lot about hunting techniques or strategies. This year I have had limited hunting outings as I'm in the military and been deployed allot, but using some of your suggestions, I have already seen improvements to my kill #'s."
Rollie Flint, Minnesota
