Use Well Painted DecoysOne of the easiest ways to create a realistic decoy spread is to have well-painted decoys. Decoys that are well painted look much more life like and well-painted decoys give your spread a much higher degree of visibility. As you have already learned, both ducks and geese have excellent eyesight. Their ability to define color is far greater than our ability to define color. In addition, as you read in Key #2, both ducks and geese are constantly cleaning and preening themselves. If your decoys are missing paint, the colors have faded or overall they just look dull, they simply do not look real. They look like decoys and ducks and geese will shy away from your spread. On a yearly basis, we touch up the paint on all of our decoys. In fact, we have repainted the vast majority of our decoy spreads to give them a more highly visible appearance. We believe that the condition and look of our decoy spreads is a great asset. The appearance of our spreads, and your spread to, is especially critical when the hunting pressure is or has been heavy or the birds are well educated. Refer to Tailor Painted for complete instructions on how to paint or repaint your decoys. Email this page to a friend. "I have been waterfowl hunting since I was 13. It's a sickness, which i'm not trying very hard to cure. I found your site just a month, or so, ago, and am enjoying it very much. I hope you keep up the great articles and videos, and update the site as often as possible. I've read, and re-read every page on here, and like I said, I'm loving what you have here!" "Have to first say that I am amazed by your website. Lots of REAL and PRACTICAL stuff. I watched the videos on painting the drake mallard and it definitely was worth joining!" "The info you guys have built up on here is priceless. I got hooked on ducks and geese two years ago and don't know a whole lot about hunting techniques or strategies. This year I have had limited hunting outings as I'm in the military and been deployed allot, but using some of your suggestions, I have already seen improvements to my kill #'s." |
