Duck Boat Selection Guide

If your considering buying a duck boat and not quite sure what to get here's some basic information that should help you decide.

Sneak Boats

The biggest advantage sneak boats offer the duck hunter is the ability to hide in very little cover. This ability gives the sneak boat hunter the flexability to hunt virtualy any where the ducks are. The down side to these boats is they are not designed for rough water and most have a weight capacity for only one hunter. With that being said a 12 to 13 foot sneak boat is a great marsh boat that can easily accomodate a hunter, dog, and around 40 to 70 duck decoys.

The next advantage sneak boats offer is mobility. Because these boats are so light they can be pulled over dikes and paddled or push poled through very shallow water.

If your thinking about a sneak boat consider building your own. I built the Kara Hummer sneak boat some years ago and it was simple to build. Several years later this boat is holding up very for me and has been a great boat to hunt out of.

Jon Boats

Probably the most versitile style of boat on the market is the jon boat. This includes the true jon boat, and the modified-v style. These boats offer higher weight and horsepower capacity, along with ample room for hunters, dogs, and hunting gear.

Whether your looking for a boat just for transportation or a boat/blind combo there are many options to choose from. Another benefit of bigger jon boats is the ability to safely navigate rough waters along with making a great fishing boat.

Traditionally aluminum boats, canoes, and many boats built today are still riveted. Even the skins of most aircraft are still riveted. I have owned several 12’ to 16’ jon boats that I used for duck hunting and never had any problems. Even after busting through a couple inches of ice these boats held up fine. But because it is more cost effective for a boat manufacturer to weld aluminum the industry trend has certainly leaned towards welded duck hunting boats. A benefit welded boats offer the duck hunter is that the aluminum used is also thicker, typically .100 versus .72 used in riveted construct. With welded boats being the industry trend the manufacturers are also going to put far more effort into new features for their welded boats versus riveted boats. If I were to recommend an aluminum boat to a duck hunter I would go with the welded hull. As much abuse as duck hunters put their boats through I believe it’s the best option.
