Layout blinds have changed the way most duck and goose hunters hunt in fields. Being light weight, easy to carry, and comfortable layout blinds are a very valuable tool for successful duck and goose hunting.
Mobility - While many of the first layout blinds made did not fold, this is one feature that's a must for me. This makes transporting your blind in a pickup box or in the field so much easier. Keep in mind your not always going to be able to drive your trailer out into a farmer's field. Next be sure the blind is simple and fast to put up and take down without a bunch of pieces that are easy to loose in a field. Trying to set up a complicated blind in the field when it's dark, or when ducks or geese are coming is not something any hunter wants to experience.
Recommended Features - While some features are a matter of personal preference here the features we look for when purchasing a layout blind.
Fold Up FrameCamo Pattern - Shadow Grass has always been a favorite of mine, but I really don't think it matters when choosing a layout blind. Remember, your going to mud your blind as soon as you get it anyways.
Stay Low - While early season geese will come into about anything once the geese have been shot at a few times they soon begin looking spreads over much closer. Using blinds that are low to the ground as possible becomes very important as the season wares on.Layout Blind Tips
Mudding a new blind is a very important step that many hunters totally forget. The purpose of this critical step is to remove the shine from new fabric and darken it’s overall color. As a bonus a mudded blind will also require less grass or cornstalks to conceal it in the field.
Matching the natural colors of the surrounding vegetation is very important when grassing up a blind. Adding a little off color grass is okay but the majority of the color should be green for grass pastures, or cornstalks when hunting harvested corn fields.
When storing your blind after hunting season add some moth balls or drier sheets inside. Mice love to make their winter homes in layout blinds and can quickly damage an expensive blind.
