Canvasback decoys were used extensively during the market hunting years on the Chesapeake Bay and these now vintage decoys typically carved from hollowed out cedar are highly sought by collectors. The Mason decoy company accounted for many of the decoys manufactured during this time. Today canvasbacks are still perused by hunters with drake cans being considered a trophy duck.
Many hardcore diver hunters still prefer the heavier weight of cork decoys as they will ride the waves of open water much more realistically than lighter plastic decoys will. But it’s still a matter of practicality when choosing between the traditional decoy materials and modern day alternatives. Decoy weight and cost are two big factors to consider that typically move the decision towards plastic.
Being painted with two highly visible colors being white and black many diver ducks are attracted to canvasback decoys. During the later part of the season these decoys also make great attractors for hunting mallards if cans are migrating through the same waters. We have taken many mallards over a small spread consisting of only canvasbacks when hunting on the upper Mississippi River where thousands and thousands of cans pass through every fall.
