Duck/Goose Decoy Spread For Hunting Ducks In Fields

Even if Canada goose season isn't open or we're hunting within a goose refuge, we still use Canada goose decoys for their extra visibility. We have found this extra visibility to be very effective in pulling distant ducks into our spread. And if goose season is open a few extra dead geese are also a nice bonus!

Tips For Setting This Decoy Spread:

  • The bulk of your decoys should consist of goose decoys placed in a modified U/C with the bulk of your decoys set behind your blind(s)
  • When setting goose decoys, use a species of goose decoy that is already present in the area
  • Your goose and duck decoys should face multiple directions for both realism as well as visibility
  • Blind placement is critical... place your blind(s) in front of the bulk of your goose decoys as ducks tend to shy away from flying directly over a large spread of goose decoys
  • Place your duck decoys in front of your blind(s) and as with your goose decoys
  • Leave a landing zone in your duck decoys for approaching ducks to commit into and we recommend leaving landing zones between your duck and goose decoys on the edges of the U
  • If using shell or full body duck or goose decoys, place as many of your decoys as possible on motion stakes to get as much movement in your decoy spread as possible
  • If using spinners, place your spinner(s) in front of the goose decoys and on the edge(s) of your duck decoys... we also recommend that you use a remote and turn your spinner(s) off if geese are approaching
