Duck Decoy Spreads
Strong Winds Duck Decoy Setup
When winds are at or above 25 mph sustained wind speed we have found ducks to not only have a tendency to short stop of landing zone, but to also not want to funnel into a tight landing zone. Here's the decoy spread we've used with a great deal of success.
Please note the decoy spread above is not intended to show exact numbers of decoys or species of decoys to use as these factors depend upon the situation.
Tips For Setting This Decoy Spread:
Set your spread in the shape of a loose C
Your landing zone must be large - do not close in the ends of your C
Do not set your last decoy in the spread any deeper than 20-25 yards from your blind our wider than 25 yards from your blind (in heavy winds ducks have a tendency to land short or behind your decoys)
Set your decoys tight - some may actually be touching each other
Use more decoys rather than less decoys
Use "visibility decoys" that have a lot of white in them to attract greater attention
Use these "visibility decoys" towards the back end and wide portions of the C
Whenever and wherever possible, locate your blind in the middle of your landing zone
